"Must-Go" Cafe's in Pondicherry!

Updated: Jun 6, 2021

let’s go Pondy café hopping now!

Whenever we remember Pondicherry there is always a clear picture of the pretty town. Embellished with Gallic mansions and buildings often roofed with pink, yellow and white bougainvillea, green avenues, pastel cafes, white shades and blue water. Aside from the charming landscape it offers, it is quite famous for its cafes. A lot of foreigners also come for café hopping here to enjoy the fusion of aromatic South Indian flavors with the soupcon French delicacies.

In 2 days I could just hop a few and spoon in some dishes, the experience of which I will probably carry lifelong.

Now if you have soaked yourself in the tropical sunshine then let me give you a tour to the delightful “must-go” cafes in Pondicherry for you to have the best coffee, fluffiest pancakes, refreshing hibiscus syrup and crisp croissants ever in your life time!

1. Café Des Art -

Let’s start with the most famous café of Pondy!

Living in the heart of White Town, this place comes under the checklist of all people visiting Pondicherry. Won't say that they offer the best food but their ambience is the most happening place to be around in Pondy. It also houses a small boutique which you might want to check out. A nicely organized bookshelf, some vintage cameras and an old rickshaw (for display but not to sit) are all to lend you a heritage aura for sure. Apart from being a picture perfect place to flood your Instagram and other social media feed they serve tasty crepes and baguettes with fresh ingredients like basils, ricotta and cherry tomatoes. Their hibiscus syrup drink is a must have!

2. Le café -

What makes this café unique from all other cafes in Pondicherry is that, it is the only seafront facing café in town. More than the food you would enjoy the view this place offers. And if you have their famous

cold coffee to sip in

& the hot lasagna bowl to dig in!

while watching the waves crashing in, then what else on earth would you require? I had also ordered their masala French fries.

3. Bread & Chocolate -

the best croissant ever!

This is a café cum bakery in Auroville. Their 7am fresh bakes sell out like hot cupcakes. Although I was too late for 7am but I managed to have the best crisp croissant ever in my life! Their menu card doesn’t' have much choices to offer but you can definitely enjoy their soft perfectly cooked pancakes. Topped with freshly cut bananas and pomegranate and some honey syrup to go with it, this is something over which i have already fallen! They also offer a variety of flavors for chocolates made from the south India cocoa beans which you may try or perhaps take back. Now this is like a chocolate treat for a chocolate lover like me!

4. Tanto -

If you are on your way to Auroville then you cannot happen to miss this pizzeria there! Apart from enjoying their bursting flavors and fresh garden toppings you can also see your pizza bake in their oven. Their ice tea is a suggested "must-try" drink. What is more appealing being the little garden which houses the café? Hence not only the garden toppings and the chilled ice tea but also the greenery around and within the café which leaves behind a long lasting soothing affect to carry on your trip with!

5. Marc's Café-

To our surprise this quaint little place encases the best ranges of coffee beans. More than a café it’s a roaster I would rather say. Rare to find in normal cafes. They source their beans at selected estates in South India, and roast them in small batches, at the café itself to ensure freshness and unique coffee experience. Select your beans and they would brew it perfectly for you. We enjoyed some great coffee, cheese omelet with veggies and sandwiches.

After having some appetizing savories there should be some room saved for desserts right?

6. GMT (Gelateria Montecatini Terme)

This particular gelato store located at one far end of the promenade can steal your heart away! They have a large assortment of flavors and can be an easy way to confuse you. Al though my all the year round favorite flavor is chocolate but their mango flavor made from local fruit is the real crowd pleaser! So scoop up some organic gelatos from the best gelateria of Pondicherry and stroll around the promenade to explore Pondy in the best possible way!

Apart from these happening cafes there are two other places which I can’t help but share with you guys as I have had one of the best south Indian meals here

They are-

1. A2B Ananda Bhavan - Situated in White Town, decades ago it was a sweet shop which has now opened restaurant services as well. Usually overcrowded but the food is of high quality, especially south Indian meals. If you are bored of the café food, then this is definitely a go-to place for a change in your taste buds.

2. 99 km coffee stop - This is basically a road side dhaba which falls on the highway from Chennai to Pondicherry. Our cab driver was generous enough to introduce this place to us. The fresh aroma of the south Indian flavors lingering around the shop made us so hungry that all of us couldn't wait but dig into our idly platters right away. Apart from the mouth-watering idlies they also serve superb filter coffee which can be a real time travel booster! (Highly recommended).
